Cancer- Melanoma and Leukemia Therapy

August 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Articles on Cell Therapy, Cancer Therapy

Conventional therapies which are put to use to cure Leukemia consist of using strong doses of drugs and radiations during chemotherapy. This treatment involves strong doses of the medication as it is necessary to get rid of the cancerous cells. But these procedures also end up doing unwanted damage. It is seen that along with destroying cancerous cells the Leukemia therapy also end up destroying normal cells of the body. In most cases these destroyed cells are the blood cells. Blood cells are very vital for the body as they produce blood. Destruction of these red blood cells in this manner is not good. But to treat cancer the doses of chemicals needed has to be high. So what is the solution?

A good viable and workable solution to aid Leukemia therapy is the introduction of stem cell transplants. Transplanting stem cells in the patient after killing the cancer cells with chemotherapy is the solution. Stem cells are cells which are capable of dividing into other cells. In this case, the blood cell divides into several blood cells. This can be helpful to negate the effects of leukemia therapy. In humans the stem cells to be used during leukemia therapy are generally isolated from the bone marrow as well as from the peripheral blood. Extracting the stem cells from the bone marrow is not only difficult but is very painful at the same time.

On the other hand the other option is to extract stem cells from the normal blood and use that. The blood in this case is removed in the normal way from the vein and is then passed through a machine. The machine is capable of separating the stem cells from the other components of the blood and therefore is ready to be used in conjunction to leukemia therapy to control its ill effects.

Melanoma Therapy- What Is It?

When the cancer effects the cells which cause the pigment melanin in the skin then the cancer is termed as Melanoma. Melanoma is seen to infect areas like a mole on the body, the eyes or even the intestines in humans. Melanoma therapy too just like leukemia generally makes use of chemotherapy and strong drugs. The radiations during Melanoma therapy are found to be effective towards curing Melanoma. The other kinds of Melanoma therapy which can be used towards its treatment include surgery, immune therapy as well as vaccine therapy. Just like in the case of leukemia therapy we can very easily combine melanoma therapy with stem cell transplant in a bid to reduce the damage that radiations and chemotherapy can induce on the patients towards the bid of curing melanoma.
