Our body wear’s and tears with age. These are the primary sign’s of ageing. Scientists today are working over time to try and control this phenomenon. Though ageing is natural and something that will eventually happen sometime or the other, what the scientists wish is to try and slow these signs. Apart from ageing we might suffer from a serious disease or could have been hurt really bad that left us with a big injury. In all these mentioned cases our body is unable to repair the damage caused to our body. The cells of the affected area are incapable of dividing and repairing the damage caused to our body. This is where stem cells come into picture. These undifferentiated cells are capable of dividing into desired cells. This thereby allows for repair of the damaged tissues. Stem cell therapy initiates the use of stem cells to take care of the affected area. The question now is that how can this be done.
There are two approaches which can be considered here. Either make the stem cells already present in the body at that region to work extra and bring about the desired changes or in the second case we could inject stem cells into the body to reach the affected area and then work towards growing new tissues and healthy cells in that area. The first scenario is still under consideration and study in the labs while the second stem cell therapy method is widely used.
When the stem cells used for stem cell therapy are derived from an embryo and used further then the process is known as embryonic stem cell therapy.
Embryonic stem cell therapy derives stem cells from embryo’s which are fertilized in in-vitro conditions after the consent of the parents. The embryo’s formed from the egg which has been fertilized inside the womb of a woman is not used to isolate embryonic stem cells. There is a huge buzz created around embryonic stem cell therapy. The various experiments conducted have yielded promising. These embryonic stem cells are expected to work wonders towards curing serious ailments like Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and several heart and vision related issues.
Cord Blood Stem Cell Therapy
Cord blood stem cell therapy refers to use of stem cells isolated from the blood present in the umbilical cord attached to the baby after it has been cut. Studies have shown that this umbilical blood is a rich source of stem cells. Subsequent use of these stem cells in therapy therefore allows them to be named as cord blood stem cell therapy. Cord blood stem cell therapy is still in its nascent stage but if studies are to be believed then there is a huge void present towards some diseases which cord blood stem cell therapy is expected to fill.
