Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have two defining properties which makes them unique and very interesting topic of study. These are: the ability to differentiate into other cells and the ability to self-regenerate. The ability to differentiate is the potential of the stem cells to develop into other cell types. A totipotent stem cell is a type of stem cell that can go on to develop into all cell types including the embryonic membranes. A pleuripotent stem cell on the other hand can develop into cells from all three germinal layers (e.g. cells from the inner cell mass).
On the other hand, the property of self-regeneration associated with stem cells is the ability of stem cells to divide and produce more stem cells. These properties have made scientists work towards using stem cell therapy towards the treatment of diseases. These include Alzheimer’s diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, osteoarthritis, , heart disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.
There are several research institutes working all over the world specializing in treatments using stem cell therapy and providing remarkable results.
